ANNUAL EVENTS:
Now in its 25th year to raise the funds necessary to support our community projects. For example, in 2001, we provided the funds necessary for the St George Hospital to purchase a minibus to transport dialysis patients to and from the hospital for treatment each week. This bus services the wider Southern area of Sydney.
Now an annual fundraising event, this function supports the GUT FOUNDATION, a foundation established to research gut/stomach cancer and our fun night is in memory of the late great Digby Richards. Featured are rock and roll greats from the 60s and 70s right up to current, all supporting a great cause. Its not unusual for us to donate $6000 + to the foundation after such a great night
Our way of says thanks to our local seniors each year. The oldest guest we have had is 93 and we provide the opportunity for partners of nursing home residents to join their spouses for a little fun time. PDG Craig Thompson tickles the ivories and we have had local school choirs come along for additional entertainment. Club Menai has been a great support to us in making sure we can continue to make this happen each year. Prior to Club Menai, The Bangor Tavern provided support to our club for this event.130 guests joined us at the end of November at Club Menai in 2008
Our assistance is given each year by way of cooking a BarBQue for the diggers in Sydney on their return from the march. A great cause and we enjoy the small part we play each year.
To do the things we do, we need to fundraise and that's where selling raffle tickets and sausage sizzles play their part. We all chip in and have a great deal of fun at the same time under our Menal Lions Marquee.
Raffle ticket sales at local shopping centers would not be the same any more without our striking blue club shirts we all wear. Add to this Lions Mints and Lions Christmas Cake sales and it all helps.
SOCIAL EVENTS
- Regular dine outs are a feature of our social calendar where the Lions and their partners visit various eaterys in our area and enjoy a good meal, discussion and fellowship.
- We also attend the occassional show at Club Menai featuring such acts as Roy Orbison, ABBA and Elton John spectaculars. Not bad when you actually remember the words to many a song.
- Father and Son Annual Winter Camp at Hill End in country NSW is a refreshing experience each winter high up in the mountains.
WHY DID WE JOIN MENAI LIONS?
Our membership comes from a mixture of backgrounds but essentially we are businesspeople from a wide variety of job roles and business sectors with one thing in common. We all firmly believe and are committed to providing support and assistance to those less fortunate than ourselves, particularly supporting projects, that in some way support our local community.
The satisfaction that we as members derive from the FELLOWSHIP and this COMMUNITY SUPPORT is extremely rewarding and very satisfying personally.
